Stand and Be a Survivor

Today’s music lesson comes from the song “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John
It’s not always the full song that sticks with you; sometimes it’s just the chorus or a single verse. That’s how it is with today’s song.
I’ve been an Elton John fan since I was in junior high school. The first album cover I remember was his Yellow Brick Road album. Most of his songs have always either lifted me, energized me, or inspired me.
“I’m Still Standing” is one of the songs that helped me hold my head up and get through my divorce: the discovery, the confrontation about his affair, the denial and then confession, the legal aspects, as well as the anger and the hurt through all of it.
I remember one confrontation where I accused him of wanting me to get as “down on my luck” as the chick he “rescued” and had the affair with, that he wanted me living barely paycheck to paycheck, struggling to pay bills, and “living on the streets.”
(Ok, I know she wasn’t homeless, but that was my impression for where he wanted me.)
I had news for him.
I was stronger than he ever gave me credit for being.
Of course, many days required me to crank the music and sing along to bolster my confidence, but after a while, I began to believe that I would make it through the divorce.
Remember:
You are still standing.
You are the survivor.
You can pick up the pieces of your life and move on.
Don’t you know I’m still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
And I’m still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mindI’m still standing. Yeah, yeah, yeah
I’m still standing. Yeah, yeah, yeah
