Life after 50,  Motivation

Are you actually living?

Today, I am taking a risk. My goal was to launch this blog in January. January became February, and February became March. Now I find that this is the first Monday of April. If I wait until I get this blog completely set like I want it to, I’ll never get it launched.

How many times have you waited for a better opportunity, better timing, better weather, better company? So many times we don’t leap at an opportunity because it just doesn’t seem the right timing.

In 2014, my husband was still driving truck over the road. It was October, and I was sitting in Northern Illinois with a personal space heater at my feet and a fleece blanket covering my body. It was a cold early October. He called to say he was parked for the night, and as we were talking, he said, “You really need to find us somewhere warm to go this winter.”

I paused long enough for him to realize that I was trying to think of a reason NOT to go.

“Look,” he continued, “it’s cold. You don’t have to plan for a substitute anymore if you are taking time off. You’re retired. You can take off in the middle of winter.”

“I’ll think about it,” was all I could commit to.

The next few days remained cold, and I began to mull over my husband’s suggestion. Then, I started researching our options. It was probably too late to get a passport, so our options were somewhat limited. Three or four days later when I talked to my husband, I asked him if he was serious about going someplace warm.

“Hell, yes!”

“Well, uh, I booked us a trip to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands: 5 days – 4 nights at an all inclusive resort.”

I’ve done a lot of waiting until just the right time. I’ve spent a lot of time waiting on my dreams. However, if we are going to live a fulfilling life, then we have to take chances. We have to stop saying someday, and make today that someday.

My “today” is this blog. I am putting this blog out there. It is not the way I want it to look, but it is getting started. I can’t wait forever to start working on my writing dream. I am taking the words by the horns and running with it.

What is your dream that you have been putting on hold that you need to take the risk and begin today? Share it in the comments.
